Covid-19 is an infectious disease caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus, first identified in China at the end of 2019. Within a few months, the virus spread worldwide, causing a pandemic that changed the medical, social, and economic life of humanity.

The disease can manifest in mild forms or lead to severe complications, especially in elderly individuals and those with chronic conditions.

Symptoms and Transmission Routes

Covid-19 primarily affects the respiratory system but also impacts the vascular, nervous, and immune systems.

Symptoms can range from mild to life-threatening:

  • fever and chills;
  • dry cough and difficulty breathing;
  • fatigue, body aches, headache;
  • loss of taste and smell;
  • in some cases – nausea, diarrhea, skin rashes, or conjunctivitis.

The main transmission route is airborne: through coughing, sneezing, talking, and breathing of an infected person.

Contact transmission is also possible through contaminated surfaces, especially if a person touches their face with their hands.

The virus spreads more rapidly in poorly ventilated indoor spaces and during close contact.

Risk Factors and Complications

Severe disease is more frequently observed in individuals with chronic conditions: diabetes, hypertension, obesity, cardiovascular, and pulmonary pathologies.

Possible complications include:

  • pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS);
  • thrombosis and inflammation of blood vessels (the virus often affects the endothelium);
  • heart rhythm disturbances, myocarditis;
  • neurological manifestations – headaches, memory issues, “brain fog”;
  • long-term post-Covid syndrome (fatigue, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties).

Prevention

Preventing infection remains the primary tool for protection:

  • maintain hand hygiene, avoid touching the face outside;
  • ventilate rooms and use air purifiers;
  • wear masks in crowded places, especially with poor ventilation;
  • support the immune system: adequate sleep, physical activity, vitamins D, C, zinc;
  • seek medical attention promptly if symptoms appear.

Vaccination and Immunity

Vaccination has become the main method for reducing mortality and severe cases of Covid-19. Existing vaccines stimulate the production of antibodies and cellular immunity, decreasing the risk of severe disease.

Having had the infection also forms immune memory; however, combined protection (previous illness + vaccination) provides the most robust immune response.

Preventive measures for health recovery after illness are also significant: normalizing vitamin D levels, trace elements, restoring gut microbiota, and monitoring inflammatory markers (CRP, ferritin, D-dimer).

Consequences of the Pandemic

The Covid-19 pandemic has impacted all areas of life. It revealed weaknesses in healthcare systems and served as a catalyst for the development of telemedicine, distance learning, and flexible work arrangements.

At the same time, levels of anxiety, depression, and social isolation have increased, especially among youth and the elderly.

The post-pandemic era requires a new approach to prevention and mental health.
