Otago University Scientists Confirm: Dietary Vitamin C is More Effective than Creams for Skin Improvement and Collagen Boosting
The University of Otago study showed that daily consumption of vitamin C-rich foods significantly increases collagen levels in the skin, improving its thickness, elasticity, and cell renewal process.
Researchers from the medical faculty of the University of Otago in New Zealand conducted a study that confirmed a direct link between blood levels of vitamin C and its content in the skin, as well as its influence on collagen production and skin condition.
The experiment involved 24 healthy adults from New Zealand and Germany, who consumed two SunGold kiwis daily for eight weeks, providing about 250 milligrams of vitamin C per day. Analysis of skin and blood samples taken before and after the intervention showed a significant increase in skin thickness, indicating enhanced collagen synthesis, as well as accelerated renewal of the outer skin layer cells.
The researchers emphasized that dietary vitamin C is absorbed by the skin much more effectively than when applied in cream form. Vitamin C molecules poorly penetrate the outer skin barrier, whereas nutrients delivered via the bloodstream reach all layers of the skin, strengthening its structure and stimulating regeneration.
In addition to kiwis, other vitamin C-rich foods such as citrus fruits, berries, bell peppers, and broccoli may have a similar positive effect. Scientists recommend maintaining an optimal blood level of vitamin C — about 250 mg per day, which corresponds to approximately one serving of five recommended fruits and vegetables daily.
Key Findings of the Study:
- Dietary vitamin C increases collagen levels, making the skin denser and more elastic.
- Cell regeneration of the outer skin layer is accelerated.
- Dietary vitamin C is more effective than creams containing this vitamin.
- Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables rich in vitamin C is important for maintaining skin health.
These findings were published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology (JID) and confirm the importance of a balanced diet for maintaining skin health and youthfulness.
