Nutritionist Warns About Hidden Risks of Excessive Tea Consumption
Excessive tea consumption, especially strong black and green tea, can lead to insomnia, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, gastrointestinal problems, and reduced iron absorption. The optimal norm is 3-5 cups per day.

Tea is one of the most popular beverages in the world, but nutritionist Daria Haikina warns about the hidden risks of its excessive consumption. In an interview with Life.ru, she explained that it is not the tea itself that harms the body, but its strength and quantity.
The nutritionist noted that one cup of black tea can contain up to 90 mg of caffeine, which is comparable to the dose of coffee in an espresso. Excessive consumption of the beverage leads to insomnia, anxiety, rapid heartbeat, as well as gastrointestinal problems such as heartburn and constipation.
Moreover, excessive tea consumption reduces iron absorption due to tannins and increases the load on the kidneys due to oxalates. Regular consumption of cheap varieties can also lead to an excess of elements such as fluoride.
The safe norm is considered to be 3 to 5 cups (600-900 ml) of black or green tea per day. White tea and oolong can be consumed a little more — up to 1 liter. As for herbal teas, they should be approached with caution depending on their composition and the body's reaction.
The specialist advises drinking tea of moderate strength and not immediately after meals so that the beverage brings only benefits. "It is important to remember that the safe dose of caffeine for an adult is up to 400 mg per day," emphasizes the expert.
Previously, gastroenterologist Evgeny Belousov also confirmed that for adults, a safe amount is considered to be 3-4 cups of tea per day, adding that individual reactions to caffeine may vary, and in some cases, it is necessary to consult a doctor.
Main Risks of Excessive Tea Consumption:
- Insomnia and sleep disturbances
- Increased anxiety
- Rapid heartbeat
- Gastrointestinal problems
- Reduced iron absorption in the body
- Increased load on the kidneys
- Risk of fluoride excess when consuming cheap varieties
Thus, to avoid negative consequences and retain the benefits of the beverage, it is recommended to limit daily tea consumption to three to five cups, pay attention to its strength and quality, and consider individual characteristics of the body.
