Disorders of the nervous system can be recognized at early stages through simple express tests. They do not replace laboratory diagnostics but allow for the detection of the first signals of deteriorating cerebral circulation and declining cognitive functions.
One such test is the balance test. To independently assess the condition of the nervous system and brain health, perform the following exercise:
- Stand straight with your hands on your hips. Bend one leg at the knee, turn it to the side, and press the heel against the inner surface of the knee of the supporting leg;
- Close your eyes and time yourself — normally, balance should be maintained for at least 20 seconds;
- If you cannot stand in this position for 20 seconds, it may indicate mild disturbances in cerebral circulation or damage to small vessels.
What the result indicates
The inability to maintain balance with closed eyes is often associated with changes in the brain structures responsible for coordination and sensorimotor integration.
Such changes can be precursors to a stroke and may also indicate a decline in memory and attention concentration.
Regularly performing the test helps to notice deviations in time and seek medical advice for a more detailed examination.
