Vitamin D and bisphosphonate therapy for optimizing spinal fusion outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis; Immunonutrition in surgical patients with colorectal cancer; The effect of vitamin D supplementation on liver function in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials; Management of postmenopausal osteoporosis; The role of vitamin D in cardiovascular health.
5. Vitamin D and bisphosphonate therapy for optimizing spinal fusion outcomes: systematic review and meta-analysis.
About the study.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of preoperative vitamin D supplementation and bisphosphonate therapy on spinal fusion outcomes and related metrics. The study included a comparison of the effects of vitamin D versus placebo and bisphosphonates versus vitamin D.
Results.
Vitamin D increases the fusion rate at one year, improves functional outcomes, and provides a small early benefit on the VAS scale. Bisphosphonate therapy accelerates early fusion, but after one year, the results become comparable. Bisphosphonates suppress P1NP and reduce fracture risk.
4. Immunonutrition in surgical patients with colorectal cancer: systematic review.
About the study.
The aim of the study was to evaluate the impact of immunonutrient supplementation on complications in surgical patients with colorectal cancer. Clinical trials and observational studies were analyzed within the systematic review.
Results.
A reduction in postoperative complications was observed with combined immunonutrient supplementation, particularly wound infections. Isolated supplementation showed no benefits.
3. The effect of vitamin D supplementation on liver function in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials.
About the study.
The study evaluated the impact of vitamin D supplementation on liver function in patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) through a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials. Liver enzyme levels were compared in patients receiving vitamin D.
Results.
The current meta-analysis demonstrates a significant reduction in ALT levels (SMD: -0.45; 95% CI: -0.87 to -0.04; P = 0.032) and ALP (WMD: -12.91 IU/L; 95% CI: -18.75 to -7.08; P < 0.001) in NAFLD patients receiving vitamin D supplementation.
2. Management of postmenopausal osteoporosis.
About the study.
The review addresses bone mass loss in postmenopausal women and fracture risk assessment, which is key in osteoporosis management. Various pharmaceutical agents for increasing bone mass and preventing fractures are discussed.
Results.
Bisphosphonates are the most widely used anti-resorptive agents, and zoledronic acid demonstrates long-lasting effects and efficacy for ten years after a single dose. Denosumab is effective in preventing fractures, but its effects quickly cease after discontinuation. Romosozumab exhibits both anabolic and anti-resorptive effects and shows broad efficacy in fracture prevention.
