Keto flu
Keto flu is a condition that people starting a ketogenic diet may experience. It can occur in the first few days after starting the diet and typically lasts from a few days to one to two weeks.
Keto flu is caused by the body transitioning from using carbohydrates to fats as its primary source of energy.
Symptoms of keto flu are often similar to the common flu and can include fatigue, headache, irritability, brain fog, weakness, dizziness, gastrointestinal issues, and difficulty concentrating.
Keto flu is a temporary condition, and discomfort will subside after adapting to the new diet.
Ways to Relieve Symptoms
To relieve keto flu symptoms, it is recommended to:
- Drink more water and maintain hydration.
- Increase salt intake to compensate for its loss through urine.
- Consume an adequate amount of fats to provide energy to the body.
- Take electrolytes such as magnesium, potassium, and sodium.
- Reduce physical exertion during the adaptation period.
- Get enough sleep for recovery.
Prevention of Keto Flu
To minimize the risk of developing keto flu, gradually reduce carbohydrate intake instead of eliminating them abruptly from the diet.
It is also helpful to plan your diet in advance to ensure it contains all the necessary electrolytes and an adequate amount of fats.
