Endocytosis

Endocytosis — is a fundamental cellular process through which cells absorb external substances by surrounding them with a portion of their own membrane and forming intracellular vesicles. This mechanism allows cells to acquire necessary molecules — nutrients, signaling compounds, lipids, and elements of intercellular communication.

Endocytosis supports normal cell functioning, regulates metabolism, and participates in the body’s defense.

Types of Endocytosis

Endocytosis is divided into several varieties depending on the size of the particles and the mechanisms of their capture.

• pinocytosis — the uptake of extracellular fluid along with the molecules dissolved in it;
• receptor-mediated endocytosis — selective absorption of substances that bind to specific receptors on the cell surface.

Mechanism of Endocytosis

The process begins with the interaction of the cell with the object being absorbed. The membrane at this point changes shape, forming a depression. As it continues to bend, a vesicle is formed, which detaches from the membrane surface and moves inside the cell. It can then fuse with lysosomes or other structures, where its contents are processed or utilized as needed.

Role of Endocytosis in Cellular Physiology

Endocytosis provides a wide range of vital functions:

1. delivery of nutrients into the cell;
2. removal of unnecessary material and participation in membrane renewal;
3. regulation of the quantity and activity of receptors on the cell surface;
4. involvement in immune responses, including the destruction of pathogens and presentation of antigens.
