Glycosylated hemoglobin, or glycated hemoglobin, is often referred to as HbA1c and represents a marker used to assess the average blood glucose level over the previous 2-3 months.
This compound is formed as a result of the irreversible attachment of glucose molecules to hemoglobin in red blood cells.
The level of HbA1c is an important indicator in the diagnosis and monitoring of diabetes.
A normal HbA1c level is less than 5.7%. A level above 6.5% may indicate the presence of diabetes.
For individuals following a keto diet, it is important to monitor the level of glycosylated hemoglobin as it reflects the long-term adjustment of blood glucose levels.
Reducing carbohydrates in the diet can lead to a decrease in blood glucose levels and, consequently, a reduction in HbA1c. In other words, the ketogenic diet can contribute to stabilizing blood sugar levels and, consequently, improving HbA1c levels.
