Fireweed Stem Tea
Fireweed stems make a mild herbal drink with almost no sugar and a very low carb load. This tea is valued for its lighter taste compared with leaf-based infusions and for the plant polyphenols that fit well into a calm homemade drink without extra additives. It is a simple way to use more of the plant, not only the leaves.
Collect tender fireweed stems (500 g), remove the toughest parts, and cut them into short pieces. To start the desired aroma changes, press the stems lightly with a rolling pin or knead them well by hand so part of the fiber breaks and the stems begin to release moisture.
Leave the prepared fireweed stems (500 g) in a covered container for 3-4 hours. During this time the smell becomes softer and noticeably deeper, without the raw grassy sharpness.
After this short fermentation, spread the stems in a thin layer and dry them completely. This can be done in a dehydrator or in the oven over low heat with the door slightly open until the material becomes light and brittle.
Store the finished tea in a dry tightly closed jar. To brew it, take part of the dried stems, pour over hot water, and let the drink steep for 10-15 minutes. The result is a lighter and more delicate version of ivan tea that works well for calm everyday tea drinking.
